{"id":174,"date":"2018-08-15T05:43:11","date_gmt":"2018-08-15T05:43:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bioleft.org\/?p=174"},"modified":"2022-04-19T17:22:39","modified_gmt":"2022-04-19T17:22:39","slug":"el-proyecto-bioleft-comparte-sus-primeras-semillas-abiertas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bioleft.org\/en\/2018\/08\/15\/el-proyecto-bioleft-comparte-sus-primeras-semillas-abiertas\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Bioleft\u2019 project shares its first open source seeds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, at a small ceremony in Argentina, seeds were transferred from researchers to farmers for the first time under a new kind of open source contract.<\/p>\n<p>Over the last eight months, STEPS America Latina has been busy discussing and designing <a href=\"https:\/\/steps-centre.org\/latin-america-hub\/bioleft-experimenting-with-open-source-seed-innovation-in-argentina\/\">Home<\/a>, an open source seed transfer contract and web-based platform to record transfers of seed material. The project, in close collaboration with seed breeders and users, was supported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/steps-centre.org\/project\/pathways-network\/\">Pathways Network<\/a> research project on transformations to sustainability.<\/p>\n<p>In the small ceremony, involving agricultural producers and plant breeders from Argentina and Uruguay the first seed material to be transferred with the Bioleft contract was exchanged. The seed material was a novel variety of white sweet clover (<i>Melilotus albus<\/i>), bred by Gustavo Schrauf and his colleagues at the faculty of Agronomy in the University of Buenos Aires. Gustavo has named the new variety <i>Ubuntu<\/i>, a Southern African word that means a belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity.<\/p>\n<p>At the event, the new seeds were transferred to representatives of the<i> Federaci\u00f3n de Organizaciones Nucleadas en la Agricultura Familiar<\/i> (FONAF).
